FORT POLK -- The U.S. Army is seeking nonprofits to adopt as many as 750 horses that roam the grounds of Fort Polk.
Officials decided to remove the horses saying they're a threat to soldiers training at the Army post.
The Army began accepting applications from non-profit animal welfare groups Monday, saying the first 10 to 30 horses could be available in mid-September.
Garrison commander Col. David Athey says individuals who want to adopt horses should work with local nonprofits, saying that may allow people to choose horses bases on gender, size, age and appearance.
Athey says there's a second list for individuals to receive horses, but says if it's activated, horses will be given away in the order that people respond.
Groups and individuals can sign up for horses by emailing usarmy.polk.imcom.mbx.pao-public-response@mail.mil.
